Calgon Carbon UV Technologies to Supply Sentinel® UV Systems to Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA)
PITTSBURGH, PA – 11/07/2018
Calgon Carbon Corporation announced today that its UV Technologies business has been awarded a contract by the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA) to supply Sentinel® Ultraviolet Disinfection Systems (UV systems) for the PWSA Highland Park Microfiltration Plant.
PWSA provides water and sewer service to more than 300,000 customers throughout the City of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. PWSA is the largest combined water and sewer authority in Pennsylvania drawing river water from the Allegheny River, producing an average of 70 million gallons of water daily.
Steve Schott, Calgon Carbon’s President and CEO said, “There’s an extra sense of pride when we are asked to provide products and services to the local communities in which we live and work. That’s especially true in Pittsburgh, our hometown since the very beginnings of Calgon Carbon Corporation. We are pleased that the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority selected our Sentinel® systems to meet their disinfection needs.”
The systems provided for the Highland Park facility include Sentinel® UV reactors, along with associated control equipment. This plant will be capable of disinfecting a peak flow rate of up to 20 million gallons per day. The project will provide PWSA customers with a barrier of protection from waterborne pathogens, with UV technology being particularly effective against chlorine-tolerant organisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
Ultraviolet disinfection of water occurs by virtue of a physical process which alters the DNA of harmful organisms, rendering them unable to reproduce and potentially cause illness. The systems apply a carefully controlled dosage of high-intensity UV light to the drinking water.
The Sentinel® UV system is widely deployed for ensuring safe drinking water worldwide and is fully validated by a third party for compliance with US EPA standards. All UV systems are manufactured and tested in Western Pennsylvania at the Calgon Carbon UV Technologies facility in Coraopolis, PA.
